Fred (John Fred) Starr was a member of the Arkansas House of Representatives from Washington County. This photograph was taken in 1955 for the composite photograph of the Sixtieth General Assembly, 1955. Starr is the author of Of these hills and us (1958), Gifts from the hills (1960), Climb the highest mountain (1964), High hills, deep hollows and tall tales (1968) and Of what was, nothing is left (1972). His weekly column "Plain Tales from the Ozarks" appeared for over 25 years in the Tulsa World and the Northwest Arkansas Times.

Joseph Shrader (1870-1946) was born in Russia and immigrated to the United States in 1892. In 1910 he moved to Little Rock, where he opened a photograph studio. He was joined in the business by his wife, Bertha Frank Shrader, and later by his son, Buddy. After a fire in 1933 destroyed all their images up to that time, Shrader reopened in a new location.
